This house was built completely without air-conditioning and is cooled and ventilated naturally, even though it is located on a very sunny South facing slope. The clients report that the combination of high R-value insulation (cellulose), strategically placed ventilating skylights, exterior architectural shading devices (trellises, arbors, overhangs) and interior ceiling fans work well to keep the house very comfortable even on hot summer days. Although it has radiant floor heating throughout, most of the heating is accomplished by the centrally located soapstone Masonry Heater, which heats with wood in an exceptionally efficient way, is free of harmful emissions and wonderfully warm and comfortable to sit next to.
