Built into a hill and facing South, this house is ideally situated for passive (and active) solar heating. We added the large tower on the left, as well the outbuildings, the courtyard and gardens. The interior was transformed to bring garden views in and provide as much natural cooling and summer ventilation as possible. For indoor climate control reasons deciduous trees and vines were added on the South and West sides, a creeper vine on the building walls on the North and East.
A fountain on the West side of the courtyard provides a sense of coolness in the summer, as well as obscuring any street and equipment noises from the village. Tower and outbuilding wrap their arms around the courtyard to create a sense of serene and complete privacy unusual in the middle of a village.
